First Night Burlington Marks Its 28th Year This New Years Eve

First Night was introduced in Boston in 1976 and is now celebrated in more than 130 cities throughout the world. It is a one-day New Year’s Eve festival of the arts, is substance-free and features an unbelievable amount of entertainment including a vast number of singers, dancers, bands, a circus and other artists.

Burlington was the fifth city in the world to participate in the First Night concept. It has become Vermont’s largest one-day arts festival and provides an affordable New Year’s Eve celebration.

It is necessary to have a specific “First Night Button” to take part in the festivities. It admits you to all official events on a first-come first-served basis. There are more than 20 venues in downtown Burlington where activities and performances take place over a twelve hour period. The few exclusions which require an additional $4.00 ticket are the Circus Smirkus, Burlington Taiko, VYO and Bluegrass Gospel.

Regular Adult Buttons are $20.00 through December 30 and $30.00 on December 31. Kids Buttons for ages 3-12 are $5.00 every day. Kids under age 3 are free.

Parking and Shuttle: City-owned parking garages and meter parking are free after noon on December 31, and the overnight parking ban will be lifted on December 31. Or you can park free at the University of Vermont’s Gutterson Parking Garage from 11:00 a.m. on December 31 through 12:30 a.m. on January 1. Walk over to the Patrick Gym for shuttles that will pick up every 15 minutes. Drop off points along Main Street include the Flynn Center and Edmunds School.

Free with your First Night button is Cartoon Fest, 12 hours of classic Looney Tunes, at Merrill’s Roxy Cinemas from 12:00 Noon to 11:45 p.m. One of the most popular features of First Night, you take a seat with a beverage and popcorn and enjoy the show!

Designated as one of the prettiest towns in the U.S., Burlington has a proud history. 15 years ago, local residents came together to spearhead efforts toward the preservation of some of the town’s historic buildings. The result was the non-profit group Preservation Burlington, whose mission remains the preservation and protection of such buildings.

Preservation Burlington achieves their goals through both education and advocacy work. Members work through three committees: the Homes Tour, Advocacy and Education committees to show their passionate enthusiasm for historic preservation in the area. The group has been responsible for helping to revitalize historic neighborhoods and for restoring some prominent buildings, including Henry’s Diner and the Captain White House.

In addition to these efforts, Preservation Burlington has been making awards each year, since 2007, to those buildings whose restorations especially deserve recognition. The annual awards are given in three categories: commercial buildings, institutional buildings and residential buildings. For a list of past winners, you can visit their website.

The group sponsors an annual homes tour with each year focusing on a different theme. For instance, in 2011 they highlighted appreciation for homes and public buildings that provided updated designs and uses of space while still maintaining the original historic integrity of the buildings. That year they also hosted a fun history hunt! The focus of their 2010 homes tour was on post World War II building styles and designs. The group also sponsors walking tours of Burlington during the summer months, with special walking tours scheduled at other times. They’ve helped residents and visitors to explore downtown, the waterfront, Old North End and the Pine Street area. They’ve also sponsored cemetery tours.

Educational programs and workshops are among the other offerings of the group, which also has a monthly television show on CCTV Channel 17. Magnolia Bistro features fresh local and organic items on its menu whenever they can. Witness The Rhythm Of Nature At The Earth Clock In Burlington, VT

The stone-made structure was built in 2006 by the non-profit organization Circles for Peace. Their philosophy is that by staying in tune with the cycles of nature, people regain their inner peace. The land was provided to the organization by the Burlington Parks and Recreation Department; construction was funded by private donations. Fourteen granite stones, weighing between 3.5 and 20 tons, have been precisely arranged to serve as a calendar and compass. A granite sundial is in the center of the clock.

The stones on the eastern edge of the circle are specifically spaced for astronomical observations. The five stones on the western edge face the Adirondack Mountains. Each one of those stones marks a point in the sun’s journey through the seasons. If it’s been a while since your last science class, then consult the educational board near the clock. The equinoxes and solstices are explained on the board along with instructions for using the sundial. Kids and adults enjoy standing on the center rock and watching their shadows mark the time of day.

In the future, Circles for Peace is planning the addition of a display board for posting children’s poetry, artwork and science projects. The clock is already a common destination for classroom field trips. The area is also used by yoga, tai chi and other exercise enthusiasts.

The clock is off the bike path at Blanchard Beach just north of Oakledge Park. The 2400 foot waterfront boasts a swimming beach and rocky shoreline. The park facilities include a playground, walking trails, tennis courts and picnic areas with grills.

In fact, they are a good, solid, all-around satisfying choice for those days when you want to try something new in familiar surroundings.

The Daily Planet has also just gone through an extensive renovation, so all three of their dining spaces are in top shape. Their solarium dining room is family friendly and also a great place for smaller private parties. The main dining room has an elegant setting and it is large enough to accommodate family reunions and office parties. The third space is the bar area, which is well-known Burlington-wide for their around-the-world approach to cocktails and drink creations. Of course, they have beer on the tap and a respectable selection of red and white wines by the glass as well.

Locals particularly enjoy going to the Daily Planet as it is not merely a restaurant; rather, it is more like a social space with incredible food and drinks. In a way, it does cater for an art-loving crowed with its gallery showcasing works of local artists and live music nights with regional bands are provided as a courtesy. Nonetheless, it also manages to create a welcoming, homey, easy-going vibe that accommodates the needs of all age groups. Their kids menu and desserts keep little ones content, and their versatile promotions give everyone a chance to enjoy their menu even on a budget. My favorite is their “dinner and a movie night” they promote jointly with Merrill’s Roxy Cinema, and I know local college students are very satisfied with the option of being able to use their dining cards here. These small gestures show clearly how well the Daily Planet has been paying attention to their customers, and you will also enjoy the same level of attention when you visit them for a great selection of global cuisine in the heart of Burlington.

Church Street Annual Santa Parade And Lighting Ceremony Burlington VT

Burlington, Vermont is a town of traditions and community. This led to the uncovering of old photographs of structures in the area and the story of how the city bulldozed the mansion to make room for the roads and park structures. Aerial photos of the park forty years ago show the contrast with aerial photos today.

The exciting activities people enjoy in the park today have a historical context. Before the park’s development, people in the area enjoyed a much simpler way of life. They used the land differently than we use it. Today, experts consider natural issues as well as development issues when they make decisions. The history of the park can only enlighten them.
